Artist Statement
My photography is an exploration of wilderness in its most authentic form—a search for moments where light, landscape, and living creatures converge to tell stories that words alone cannot express. I approach each photographic expedition as a complete journey, beginning long before the camera is in hand. The process of studying maps, researching wildlife patterns, monitoring weather conditions, and venturing into remote areas is as integral to my work as the technical aspects of photography itself.
Having spent years in the film industry, I bring a cinematic sensibility to my still images. I'm drawn to the narrative potential of a single frame—how composition, lighting, and timing can capture not just a visual moment, but the emotional essence of an environment or encounter. My background has taught me that the most compelling images are those that invite viewers to feel as though they are present in the scene, experiencing it firsthand.
The landscapes of British Columbia and Saskatchewan provide me with contrasting yet equally inspiring canvases. In the coastal rainforests and mountains of the west, I seek to capture the interplay of light filtering through mist and foliage, revealing layers of life and history. On the prairies, I'm drawn to the drama of vast skies, the subtle textures of grasslands, and the intimate moments of wildlife against expansive horizons.
My work is characterized by patience and observation. I often spend days in a single location, becoming attuned to its patterns and peculiarities. This immersive approach not only yields more authentic images but deepens my connection to the environments I photograph. I believe that this connection is evident in my work and helps to foster a similar sense of relationship between viewer and subject.
Ultimately, my goal is to create images that transcend mere documentation, inviting viewers to experience wilderness with the same sense of wonder and reverence that drives my own explorations. In a world increasingly disconnected from nature, I hope my photography serves as both a window into wild places and an invitation to protect them.
